C2C: Keld to Reeth

Took a sleeping pill last night as there was commotion going on nearby, families, kids screaming, people playing music etc. On future trips we will pick our overnight stays wisely - the more peaceful, small and walker-orientated, the better. Anyway, we were at the door of the cafe for 8.30 when it opened and I got a cup of tea and a highly unfortunate sausage roll. It was raining on and off. We ventured out at about 9.30. The going was fairly easy today - mostly quite level and grassy. Meadows full of wildflowers, and mostly alongside a boulder-strewn river of the clearest water. There was a waterfall just outside Keld - lots of families were there yesterday to swim in the heatwave. The weather broke last night in spectacular fashion just after we’d retired to our tents for the night. Furious rain and thunder for a while. It was great while it lasted as it meant everyone had to sod off into their campervans etc.

We walked along  half of Swaledale  today. It’s a valley that goes all the way to Richmond. Dotted picturesquely with cow-houses.

There was an abrupt change to moorland shortly before Grinton YHA. A bit of a trudge for those last few miles, as some of it was tarmac road. It was a route we took to avoid a long climb up the hill from Reeth.

I had problems with my feet again today and had to change into sandals again. Am worried about how I’m go  in g to carry on walking for another week, and think I will get some other shoes from the outdoor shop in Richmond tomorrow as we pass through.

The YHA is great - big, roomy lounge with a view over the valley. Elizabeth and I seem to be the only people camping here tonight. There aren’t many people here really. Everywhere is much busier at weekends. Going to have a YHA dinner shortly. After my shower I sat in the lounge and quickly conked out. Felt a bit tired today, maybe from taking a sleeping pill two nights in a row! Long day tomorrow, 16 miles!
