We were both awake at 5.20! I’d taken a Nytol to fall asleep among the noisy families on the campsite, and had my best night’s sleep of the trip so far. We could see each other from our tents and I waved to say I was awake. So up we got, and having eaten our egg and beans we were in Kirkby Stephen by 7 to buy some fruit etc for today’s walking.
The views were great today, peaty (and sometimes wet) moorland. I had to walk in my sandals as I had blisters from my proper shoes. They made my pack really heavy. It was tricky navigating the peaty bog in sandals! I’m hoping my feet will be ok to wear my shoes tomorrow, as it’s going to have rained. Stormy tonight, and the temperature is due to drop about 10 degrees by the morning. Better for walking.

| A decent amount of it today was paved with giant slabs, to prevent erosion |

| Someone has spent a lot on all these new bridges too, across the really boggy chasms |

Happy to arrive in Keld, as it had just started raining! Note Elizabeth legging it up the final hill. After pitching our tents we went to the Keld Green cafe - very unassuming family affair, and they made us a sumptuous late lunch. Manna to my taste buds!
We’ve come back to the other cafe now, nearer to the campsite, and the weather is lovely - a balmy 23 degrees with a faint breeze. The lady in the cafe says the midges will be out later, because it’s warm and damp after today’s rain. We are sitting having a nice chat to pass the time. Current view:
We shall repair to our tents if and when it starts raining. They have a nice view too!
It did rain - in fact, there was a massive thunderstorm. Fun.
