C2C: St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge

Well, one thing we had plenty of today was water. It rained all last night and, while we had a cup of tea in the local cafe, it pelted down.

However, the saving grace was that it wasn’t cold or too windy. We were just a bit clammy in all our waterproofs. But at least it meant we had less in our rucksacks! There’s always a silver lining.

Not too much by way of ascent today. We haven’t reached the big hills yet. We had to make a diversion to get to How Cock Moor because trees had fallen in the forest and the path was unsafe. A friendly local wound his window down, explained the detour to us and gave me a little red notebook complete with pencil, and coast to coast written on the front. Church-related. Welcome to Westmorland, he said.  Very gratifying. Legs, hips and feet stood up well to the pounding today, although my legs did feel a bit tired for the last few miles.

We had to cross this. Note the frenzied camerawork.

We are now ensconced in the Fox and Hounds pub, having pitched our tents in a tiny designated area by a stream. Waiting till it’s late enough to have dinner. All our stuff is on the radiator. Hungry!
