C2C: Borrowdale to Grasmere

A tiring day today because the terrain was almost all rocky and steep (both up and down). The downward paths were particularly slow because of the ever-present risk of a turned ankle or knee.

We got up to a beautiful, bright summer’s day, and the sunshine carried us through with barely a cloud. It was perfect walking weather because we also had a cool breeze to soothe our brows. Elizabeth commented that it’s rare to get constant weather like that in the Lake District as there’s usually rain or wind looming up from somewhere.

We were undecided on whether we would continue on to Patterdale today, as it’s due to rain most of the day tomorrow. However, on the approach to Grasmere we realised that it would be far too much (including for my knees) so we stopped at Grasmere after a hard five hours or so.

Yay!

The youth hostel in Grasmere is great - spacious and not very busy. Lots of lounge space in a lovely old building. Also a kitchen where we can make ourselves some dinner. After a shower we made the very short walk into Grasmere to have celebratory tea and delicious cake in Baldry’s. Very restorative!

The question of the hour is what time the rain tomorrow is going to set in. Not looking forward to our clothes, shoes and rucksack getting wet again, especially as our camping destination isn’t a youth hostel with a drying room, but the following day is going to be dry so we’ll survive!
