Elizabeth drove us from her house to Eastbourne, where we met up with Louise and Jo. Jo drove us all in her car to our start point at Devil’s Dyke. Great weather, sunny with a cool breeze.
We pitched our tents at a nice campsite just by the rather noisy A27. It had a lovely little shop with proper coffee on offer. Then we got the bus into Lewes, a pretty and historic town that rejoices in a Waitrose. Got stuff for tomorrow’s lunch and had an adequate dinner (fish and chips) in the pub. It was nice and quiet in the night but my sleeping bag wasn’t warm enough, and the ultra-lightweight tent had no insulating properties (in fact, the wind more or less blows in). However, I slept far better than I had any right to in the circumstances. I was a bit groggy in the morning but didn’t have a sense of having lain awake all night. The air mattress is extremely good.
